OCEN + ART + ENGAGEMENT
A global educational initiative driven by art to connect people of all ages with ocean care and conservation.
WHAT IS ?

DRIFTLINE Ocean+Art+Engagement is an educational and cultural project conceived and developed through direct collaboration between MANGO Artist Residency (Argentina) and Moku Art Studio (U.S.).
Through this transnational partnership, we transform the research and works of the artists participating in the Virtual Ocean Residency into a dynamic catalog of interactive and creative artistic activities.
Designed with accessible materials and available in English and Spanish, our activities translate marine science concepts into engaging and meaningful experiences.
They are aimed at students at all educational levels (K–12), teachers, families, museums, cultural centers, and learning communities around the world, with the goal of making a real impact and fostering a deep awareness of the ocean.

WHY ?

When we experience the ocean through art, we connect with it in a different way
DRIFTLINE emerged from the Virtual Art Residency on the Ocean, where we saw how artists can open up new, personal, and meaningful ways to connect with the ocean. Their artistic practices make ocean-related topics more accessible, relatable, and memorable—not through textbooks or predetermined lessons, but through curiosity, creation, and personal experience.
Instead of approaching ocean literacy solely through scientific information, DRIFTLINE uses artistic practice as a starting point for exploration, dialogue, and connection. Each activity is inspired by a real artist’s practice and their relationship with the ocean, creating a space for students and communities to discover, question, and engage with the ocean from their own perspective.
Developed in collaboration with MANGO and Moku Art Studio, DRIFTLINE draws inspiration from the vision of the Venice Declaration on Ocean Literacy, which promotes a culture of ocean stewardship and protection. The resources are available in English and Spanish to facilitate their use in different educational and cultural contexts.
International Recognition
Driftline has been recognized as part of UNESCO’s Blue Thread network,
in recognition of its commitment to advancing ocean literacy
through artistic practice and to promoting inclusive,
art-led approaches to ocean stewardship.
Blue Thread recognizes individuals, organizations, and companies that actively
promote the principles of the Venice Declaration on Ocean Literacy,
including sustainable ocean stewardship, inclusive participation,
and the development of innovative approaches to ocean-related
challenges.

HOW IT WORKS
Our worksheets and teaching guides are designed to be versatile and adaptable. We do not propose a rigid curriculum, but rather tools that educators and facilitators can easily integrate into their own programs:
🏫 Formal Education (K-12): Activities ready to be implemented within the official curriculum at all levels (preschool, elementary, and secondary) internationally.
🏛️ Non-Formal and Community Education: Activities redesigned for museums, cultural centers, galleries, nature clubs, and homeschooling groups.
🌍 Global Approach: Whether you’re on the coast or inland, DRIFTLINE brings ocean culture to any community around the world.

ACTIVITY GUIDE
What will you find in DRIFTLINE?
Each DRIFTLINE activity guide is developed in collaboration with an artist who participated in our residencies and is inspired by their artistic practice and their relationship with the ocean. The guides are designed to be accessible and adaptable to different ages and learning contexts, using simple, inexpensive, and—whenever possible—reused materials.
Intended for the classroom, DRIFTLINE’s activities are also designed to extend beyond formal education—to museums, cultural spaces, nature clubs, homeschooling groups, and other community learning settings.
Each Driftline activity guide includes:
-
A comprehensive activity plan, adaptable to different age groups, from early childhood education through secondary school.
-
A step-by-step guide to facilitate the activity.
-
A list of materials, prioritizing accessible, affordable, and reused resources whenever possible.
-
Assessment tools, including a simple rubric to guide and evaluate the learning process.
-
Adaptations and support strategies to address different needs, abilities, and learning styles.
-
Selected audiovisual resources to extend the experience beyond the activity.
